There is good news along with the approval and arrival of the COVID vaccine. Dogs are being trained to be the first line of defense in many applications.
Innovative training and early research provides proof-of-the-concept, that dogs can sniff out COVID. The innovative training promises hope in the fight against COVID.
Claire Guest Co-Founder of Medical Detection Dogs in the UK reminds us, “Dogs have 350m sensory receptors dedicated to olfaction, humans have 5m. Some dogs can work with parts per trillion.”
Their research has indicated that these dogs can detect minuscule traces of odour, about one part per trillion, or the equivalent of a teaspoon in two Olympic swimming pools.

Picture this…the front lobby of a long term care home. As you enter the building to visit your love one you are greeted by a beautiful dog. The beauty is not just skin deep but goes well below the surface. The dog begins the sniff search and gives the green light that no COVID is present. You use the hand sanitizer, mask is on and you proceed to the elevator fully confident that a visit with your loved one is safe.
Every day thousands of students get ready to enter the doors of their schools. Picture this…each door is ready for children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 to enter after they have had the sniff of approval from a dog. Not only does the dog provide the information needed for a safe entry it is friendly. Teachers and administrative staff will receive the same safe sniff.
Picture this…in your local hospital. Every entry has a trained dog to do the safe sniff to protect everyone who enters the building.
Picture this…along with the drug and bomb sniffing dogs at the airport, checking passengers, you now include a COVID sniffing dog.
I questioned the need for the detection dog training with the vaccine approval. In doing more research and digging into reality thinking, the more tools in the tool box the better. It could be a long time before vaccinations are given to everyone. It also seems there is the need to prepare for the next pandemic as horrific as that may sound. Disease is transferring more and more between animals and humans.
“A readiness platform, for the next one. We know what to do, what samples we need, and how to collect them, so we can deal with this quicker next time. ”If necessary, there could be a team of dogs, trained and ready to go, to send out to an emerging virus’s country of origin. A proof-of-concept study was initiated to see if dogs could sniff out COVID. The study was conducted at two sites Paris France and Beirut, Lebanon. The success rate per dog ranged between 76% and 100%. The next step is to perform validation studies. This is definitely a positive step forward in the fight against COVID.

Bringing medical doctors, veterinary surgeons, epidemiologists and dog handlers together to collaborate seems more interesting and important than ever before. The “One Health-One Medicine” concept through the work of dedicated people is getting more and more validation in the public health and animal health communities.

My love for dogs is so very deep. It has been a part of who I am since I was a very young child. For dogs to get the opportunity to fulfill their innate desire to help humans in such an incredibly impactful way is magnificent. It was not a long time ago the skeptics didn’t believe the idea that a dog could detect a diabetes low blood sugar and provide an alert to their human. Look how far we have come!
